Carl Heinrich Bloch (23 May 1834 – 22 February 1890) was a Danish artist born in Copenhagen. He studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Art under Wilhelm Marstrand but pursued his passion for art despite his parents' wishes for him to join the Navy. Bloch traveled to Italy, where Rembrandt's work influenced him. He married Alma Trepka in Rome on 31 May 1868, and they had a happy marriage until she died in 1886, which greatly affected him as he raised their eight children alone. Bloch's early works depict rural life. He lived in Italy from 1859 to 1866, a crucial period for his artistic development. His first significant success was the 1865 exhibition of "Prometheus Unbound." After Marstrand's death, he decorated the ceremonial hall at the University of Copenhagen. H.C. Andersen wrote to Bloch, praising his art and encouraging him to leave a lasting legacy. Bloch was commissioned to create 23 paintings for the King's Chapel at Frederiksborg Palace, illustrating scenes from the life of Christ. These original works, painted between 1865 and 1879, remain at Frederiksborg Palace, with altarpieces in several locations across Denmark, Sweden, and the Faroe Islands.
