Fra Angelico, born Guido di Pietro (circa 1395 – 18 February 1455), was a Dominican friar and renowned Italian Renaissance painter. He is best known for the frescoes he created for his friary, San Marco, in Florence, and other religious works across Italy. Contemporarily known as Fra Giovanni da Fiesole and Fra Giovanni Angelico, his modern Italian name is Beato Angelico, meaning "Blessed Angelic One." In 1982, he was beatified by Pope John Paul II, officially recognizing his holiness. The name "Fiesole" refers to the town where he took his Dominican vows and distinguishes him from others named Giovanni. He is commemorated on 18 February, the anniversary of his death. Vasari praised him for his humility and the piety evident in his artwork, stating, "it is impossible to bestow too much praise on this holy father."
