Carlo Maratta (or Maratti), born on May 18, 1625, and died on December 15, 1713, was an Italian Baroque painter and draughtsman. He was primarily active in Rome, where he became the leading painter in the second half of the 17th century. Maratta specialized in both fresco and canvas painting and worked across a variety of genres, including history and portrait painting. He is recognized as the foremost representative of the classicizing style in the Italian Late Baroque period. Throughout his career, he served many prominent clients in Rome, including several popes.
