Francesco Granacci Madonna and Child, 2-Sided Ceramic Ornament, 3 Inch Diameter

Francesco Granacci (1469 – 30 November 1543) was an Italian Renaissance painter based in Florence. Though not widely recognized today, he was highly respected in his time and is mentioned in Giorgio Vasari's "Lives of the Artists."

Born in Villamagna and trained in Domenico Ghirlandaio's workshop, Granacci became friends with Michelangelo. He visited Lorenzo de' Medici's sculpture garden and was influenced by Ghirlandaio and Filippino Lippi. According to Vasari, Granacci modeled for a figure in Filippino's "Raising of Theophilus" in the Brancacci Chapel.

In 1508, Granacci traveled to Rome to assist Michelangelo with the Sistine Chapel ceiling. Upon returning to Florence, he created notable works such as the "Madonna and Child with Saints Francesco and Jerome" and the "Assumption of the Virgin," both at the Galleria dell'Accademia. He also participated in decorations for Pope Leo X's visit in 1515 and completed a panel of the "Virgin and Child with Saint John the Baptist" in 1519.

His later works (1520–1525) show influence from Fra Bartolomeo, exemplified in pieces like the "Madonna and Child with Saints Sebastian and Francis." In 1527, he painted the "Entry of Charles VIII into Florence" and an altarpiece for the Church of San Simone e Giuda. His significant altarpiece for Sant'Apollonia was reportedly designed by Michelangelo.

Granacci died in 1543 and is buried at Sant'Ambrogio in Florence.
