Alessandro di Mariano di Vanni Filipepi, known as Sandro Botticelli (circa 1445 – May 17, 1510), was an Italian painter of the Early Renaissance. His posthumous reputation diminished until the late 19th century when the Pre-Raphaelites revived interest in his work. Botticelli's art embodies the linear grace of late Italian Gothic and Early Renaissance styles, despite being created during the latter half of the Renaissance.
Best known for mythological subjects, Botticelli also depicted numerous religious themes, especially Madonna and Child, as well as portraits. His most famous works, "The Birth of Venus" and "Primavera," are in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.
Botticelli lived his entire life in Florence, with brief periods in Pisa and the Sistine Chapel in Rome. While only one painting, the "Mystic Nativity," is dated (1501), other works can be dated with some certainty. His independent mastery in the 1470s saw a rise in reputation, while the 1480s was his most successful decade. By the 1490s, his style became more personal, moving away from the emerging High Renaissance toward a more Gothic or "archaic" style.
