According to the New Testament, Jude was one of Jesus's 12 apostles. He is commonly identified as Thaddeus and is also known as Judas Thaddaeus, Jude Thaddaeus, or Lebbaeus. He is distinct from Judas Iscariot, the apostle who betrayed Jesus.

Catholic writer Michal Hunt notes that Judas Thaddaeus became known as Jude to differentiate him from Judas Iscariot. Most non-English versions of the New Testament use the same name for both apostles.

The Armenian Apostolic Church honors Thaddeus alongside Saint Bartholomew as its patron saints. In the Catholic Church, he is the patron saint of desperate situations and lost causes.

Jude is often depicted with a club and a flame around his head, representing his presence at Pentecost. He may also be shown holding an image of Jesus, a scroll, or a carpenter's rule.
